Girl scouts allowed to sell treats at 'adult-oriented' stores after girl sells more than 300 boxes in hours

The Girl Scouts of Colorado has updated its policy for 2018 cookie sales, allowing the baked goods to be sold outside "adult-oriented" businesses like marijuana dispensaries.

Girl Scouts council spokeswoman AnneMarie Harper said potential cookie sale sites are now all treated the same, according to the Denver Post.

But the girls won't be able to set up shop just anywhere - all sites must be approved by the organisation.

“We think the new policy empowers Scouts to be the best cookie entrepreneurs they can be,” Ms Harper said.

The spokeswoman said safety is the greatest concern and permission also has to be sought from both property and business owners.

“Approval of those sites is contingent on whether they meet our guidelines and safety requirements,” Ms Harper said.

Marijuana publication The Cannabist reports that selling baked goods outside casinos, marijuana dispensaries and bottle shops was previously forbidden.

But this weekend's listed sale sites included coffee shops, bars, a tattoo parlour and a marijuana dispensary in Lakewood.

Girl Scouts of the USA officials emailed a statement to the Denver Post which said, “Decisions regarding where, when and under what circumstances girls can sell Girl Scout Cookies are made by troop leaders, with guidance and oversight from local Girl Scout councils."

And one Girl Scout in San Diego has proved that this might be a lucrative position for peddling the baked goods.

The unidentified girl scout set up outside a dispensary after California fully legalised marijuana last month and in a six hour period reportedly sold more than 300 boxes of cookies.

The sales are reported to have raised close to $1500.
