WATCH: Young man jumps onto train tracks to rescue runaway toddler

A young man did not hesitate to jump onto train tracks to rescue a toddler who had run from his mother and plummeted onto the line moments before a train was due to arrive.

The boy, believed to be a two-year-old, can be seen in the security footage leaping up from his chair and charging towards the railway line at Repubblica, in Milan, local media reports.

Immediately his mother stands up and drops her belongings - seemingly preparing to jump into the space after her son.

As she leans over the platform a number of people approach her, including one man who runs towards the commotion.

Without hesitation he throws his backpack to the ground and jumps onto the line. He then rescues the child and passes him back up to his mother.

MilanoToday reports that that man is Lorenzo Pianazza, 18, who told the publication he "did something that anyone would do."

The teenage hero told the media outlet there was only a minute until the approaching metro was due to arrive.

Fortunately a station agent had spotted the drama unfolding on a monitor and made sure the train did not make it to the stop.

Mr Pianazza said the terrified mother had thanked him and the young boy had also been very frightened throughout the ordeal.

The toddler was fine following the incident but was reportedly taken to hospital as a precaution.
