Woman builds SuperShe island resort excluding all men

A woman is creating an island resort which excludes men.

Seattle woman Kristina Roth, the founder of SuperShe, a women's empowerment and socialising network, plans on opening an island resort exclusively for females in June, the New York Post reports.

SuperShe Island, in Finland about an hour and a half from Helsinki airport, will allow women to book vacations without the company of the opposite sex.

Ms Roth said the idea was for women to focus on themselves.

"When there was a cute guy, women would put on lipstick," she said.

"The idea [at SuperShe island] is, hey, focus on yourself - don't try to get your hormones up."

She's insisted she doesn't hate men, and said it's possible men could visit the island in future.

It won't be cheap though. A seven-day stay starts at US$3,500, according Global News Canada. Visitors also have to be SuperShe members, and Ms Roth added the would like to "vet the person" and see they fit in. Applying to be a member includes a Skype interview.

She said she doesn't "want to be elitist".

A village in Kenya has also banned men. Umoja began as a village for survivors of sexual violence in 1990 and now has more than 200 inhabitants - most of them children, The Guardian reports.

SuperShe Island isn't the only one which bans people based on gender. A sacred island in south-west Japan bans women from visiting and insists all male visitors strip naked and swim in the water before going ashore.

There was some debate on whether Okinoshima should receive a Unesco world heritage listing based on its men only rule, but it was declared so in July last year. However, the island is not open to the public.

It's never been publicly stated why women aren't allowed on the island.
