Pets might be cute Christmas pets, but many owners unaware of how costly they can be

Australians spend more than $12.2 billion a year on pets, and that's just during the first 12 months of owning one.

This Christmas, animals are set to be one of the top gifts, but new research reveals consumers are unaware of the costs, and many are being conned.

Many people buying pets as gifts are not prepared for set-up and ongoing expenses, with bedding, housing, food and vaccinations adding up to thousands of dollars.

The most expensive pets, ponies are $3000 to buy, but cost more than $13,000 to keep just for the first year.

Golden Retrievers cost more than $4000 to buy and maintain, and Cavoodles are also pricey, costing almost $2200 in the first 12 months.

Even cats can cost well over $1000 in their first year.

Duped by unscrupulous animal sellers, some new pet owners are also being swindled by "fake breeders".

Scammers have been caught lying about the breed and health of their animals and often produce fake paperwork.

Experts warn of online pet advertisements listed by so-called "breeders" who expect payment prior to delivery.

In many cases the animals either don't exist, haven't been vaccinated, or can be very ill, they say.

Avishan bought beagle Nula from a Gumtree ad, believing she was pure bred, registered and vaccinated.

It was a con that has cost her $6000 in vet bills.

"We found she was riddled with worms and she had fleas," she told 7 News.

"She is a very sick dog and we will spend a lifetime looking after her.

"We love her. It is absolutely devastating,"

Four Paws Animal Campaigner Jeroen van Kernebeek said mistreated dogs are often "kept in terrible conditions" in cages or concrete cells.

He advised those considering buying pets online against having an animal delivered.

"Go and check out the seller yourself and make sure all the paperwork is there and you know where the animal comes from," he said.
