'Wolf Creek is excellent': How Aussies responded to mum worried about her daughter's trip down under
An American mum taking to social media site Reddit to seek assurance her daughter will be safe while travelling in Australia has been confronted by the larrikin sense of humour that abounds down under.
Putting her heart on the line the woman admits she is worried about her daughter who is taking on the "trip of a lifetime", and asks Australians to keep her and her boyfriend safe.
In response she has been encouraged to send her daughter to Bunnings for lunch, advised of our deadly wildlife and recommended she watch "Wolf Creek".
“My daughter has taken my life experiences and mom's wisdom to heart, she and her boyfriend have worked hard and saved for years," the mum writes.
"Next month, they will be coming to your amazing country to spend 14 days on the trip of a lifetime before settling down.
“As a dreamer, I cannot be happier for my daughter. As a mother I am afraid.
"My little girl (who is an adult) will be a world away. This is very scary for me. Please return my daughter and her boyfriend safe.
“Thank you. Love from every mom who has a child that travels.”
Reaching out for assurance, she was instead met with an abrupt response of Australian dry humour and sarcasm.
“Make sure they visit a popular lunch time restaurant called Bunnings and get an immaculate sausage sanga with sauce,” was one response.
“All our citizens aren’t brandishing lethal weapons. So should be fine,” another added.
And here are some other examples showing off the dry Australian wit.
“You should watch some movies based in Australia to really get in the mood! Wolf Creek is excellent.”
“We have an entire TV show about tourists getting out of their depth in one of our most popular beaches.”
"Don't worry. Apart from the spiders, snakes, drop bears, crocodiles, sharks, bunyips, jellyfish, dingos, stinging trees, thylacines and backpacker murderers she's got nothing to worry about."
Sure, mom - you've got nothing to worry about at all.
