Melbourne book store slammed after closing its doors on same-sex marriage 'no' voters

A Melbourne bookstore has been criticised online after warning people who “vote no” in the upcoming same-sex marriage postal vote to never visit their shop again.

“If you vote ‘No' in the forthcoming plebiscite, please never visit our shop again,” Sticky Institute wrote on its Facebook page.

Enraged social media users held no punches when delivering a string of scathing comments.

Others threw their support behind the store's stance, with more than 1500 people liking the post.

One angry social media user wrote: “And there goes your business... first rule of owning a business is you don't discriminate. Money is money and it's hard enough breaking even without taking everything you can get”.

“I'd give no stars but can't. As an adult with my own brain I don't like businesses telling me how to vote on a subject,” another wrote.

“Obviously run by bigots who are intolerant and practice outrageous discrimination,” another said.

Refusing to back down, the popular magazine store addressed every comment individually before posting a second post affirming their stance.

“In light of yesterday’s post we would like to remind everyone that Sticky has always been a political queer artists space. In this sense we have always reserved the right to eject anyone we feel may be harmful to our patrons or the shop itself.

"We are not the thought police, you can think and say whatever you want but we do not have to tolerate you or welcome you into our space. We are a shop made up of extremely dedicated volunteers and we will always do what we can to keep our community safe."
