How did a toddler drown in front of 50 wedding guests?

A toddler has drowned in the US at a wedding reception with more than 50 people in attendance.

Marquavis Threat was last seen after midnight during the reception at a property on Crestwood Boulevard in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, MS News reports.

According to Birmingham Police Lieutenant Sean Edwards, Marquavis couldn’t be found when they first checked the pool because the water “was murky”.

Police instead found his body several hours later.

Lt Edwards said the homeowners initially did not want investigators to enter the home.

"There was a little hesitation," he said.

"Cooperation wasn't there 100 per cent initially."

There were about 50-70 people in attendance at the wedding reception and about half a dozen of them are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Lt Edwards questioned how Marquavis managed to drown given the number of adults.

“You’ve got adults all over the place,” he said.

“Our concern, our questions are accountability and responsibility.

“Where was the adult supervision that needed to take place at this location?”

A coroner is expected to examine Marquavis’ body as investigations continue.
