Cousins assaulted by Perth prison inmates: reports

Fallen AFL superstar Ben Cousins has reportedly been assaulted inside a Perth prison for declining to take part in a football match.

Sports journalist Damian Barrett told The Footy Show on Thursday night that the 38-year-old former West Coast Eagle was "set upon" in prison.

Cousins has been behind bars for more than seven weeks after being handed down a 12-month sentence in late March for causing "ongoing terror" to his former partner Maylea Tinecheff.

Barrett claims Cousins was assaulted after refusing to participate in a scratch match but did not specify when the alleged attack took place.

Cousins remains a controversial figure as his life continues to careen out of control.

He has admitted to stalking former partner Tinecheff, with whom he has two children, and repeatedly breaching a restraining order.

The former West Coast Eagles golden boy has struggled to overcome a well-documented drug addiction in recent years.
