'We couldn't weigh it': Perth fishermen land catch of the year

Two Perth fishermen have made the catch of the year with a fish too big to be weighed.

Photos taken by Reece Wepener and Michael Edwards show the huge fish that the pair caught off Jurien Bay on Saturday.

“We really go out there to catch blue-eye trevalla and and the biggest one we’ve had of them is 42kg,” Mr Wepener recounted of his epic catch.

“Our scales go to 65kg. And this one bottomed them out. We couldn’t weigh it.”

This isn't the first time Mr Edwards has seen a big fish. Just last month he managed to snare a 50kg version of the same species.

Less than four weeks on and his effort has already been topped by a fish that Mr Wepener believes weighed at least 70kg.

“We had to pull it up from about 400 metres, so it took a good hour and a half to get it in the boat," Mr Wepener said.

“The fish pulled so hard that the reel couldn’t cope with it - it blew up. One of my mates had to grab a hand reel to bring it in."

By Sunday afternoon they were back in Perth and trying to work out exactly what to do with their haul.

“I’m cooking some of it now...I reckon I’ll have to give most of it away,” Mr Wepener said.

“But I’ve been Googling recipes for cooking it all afternoon.”
