'Now remember, it's not a race': Singing NZ cop raises awareness of road safety in viral video

A police officer in New Zealand has chosen a unique way to spread the road safety message this Easter.

Senior Sergeant Nathan Davis has reworked the Earth, Wind and Fire classic September to remind people to take it easy on the roads.

The singing police officer filmed the song while driving around in his police car and the video has gone viral.

He rewrote the lyrics of the song with his wife and sons and they now include lines like: "When you're driving, driving to the road conditions".

"And it's also important to remember, when you're tired, have a break.

"Now remember, it's not a race, the system, we just want you safe, just remember, listen to what we say."

The Palmerston North police officer old Sunrise this morning he was happy with the response the video has had.

Senior Sergeant Davis said he has only done a little bit of singing before and has performed in a few musicals, once dressing up as an elephant for a production at his wife's bidding.

Since it was shared on the Central District Police Facebook page on Monday the video has been viewed more than 550,000 times and shared thousands of times.

He said his family is very musical and September is a family favourite.

Senior Sergeant Davis said he hopes the video helps to encourage people to be safe on the roads.
