Train vandals pile up seats in carriage exit leaving passengers with nowhere to sit

A passenger was shocked when he boarded a train to Sydney, after he was left with nowhere to sit as vandals pulled all of the seats off and blocked an exit.

Steve Mateer boarded the Intercity train in Katoomba on Tuesday night and found the seats bare.

"I went 'oh what? What? What is all this about?" Mr Mateer said.

"I looked at the guy behind me, who walked in the door behind me, and he was equally as shocked as I was.

"I started taking photos because it's not something you see every day."

The train had left Lithgow at 9.30pm, before reaching Katoomba at 10.20pm, giving the vandals almost an hour for destruction.

"The station staff came in and were like ‘Oh you’ve got to get out of here, this isn’t good. We'll have to seal up the carriage, move onto another one’," Mr Mateer said.

“I was just bewildered that anyone would go to that sort of length for something so insignificant."

While there are no cameras on the carriage, police are hunting three vandals after reviewing station security footage.

“Those who think they’re getting away with this behaviour, they’re wrong,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.

Despite the vandalism, the train was able to continue on to Central with the carriage sealed off.

“It’s really infuriating,” NSW Trains boss Rob Mason said.

“It’s no fun at all, people may think this is fun but it’s not.
