Australian mother and three sons found on Japanese mountain top

The Australian family reported as missing from a snowfield in Japan have been found at the summit of the mountain.

A search for the mother and her three sons began this morning amid fears they never returned from the slopes on Monday,

Australian officials have been contact with local authorities in Japan, who were trying to locate the family at Nozawa Onsen.

The Nozawa Onsen ski resort posted the update to Facebook, saying all members of the family are fine.

"The missing family has just been found up the top of the mountain! Have just gotten off the phone with the head of Nozawa Ski Patrol and all members are fine. Everyone is very relieved to hear. A big thank you to the hard working team at Ski Patrol and a strong message to everyone on the slopes at the moment to be very careful with more heavy snow again overnight," the post read.

The temperatures overnight in the area were below -10 degrees and snow continues to fall today.
