Plane carrying Donald Trump's running mate skids off runway

A plane carrying Donald Trump's running mate Mike Pence skidded off a runway when it tried to land in wet weather in New York.

The Republican vice presidential candidate and members of the media were on the plane when the aircraft fish-tailed before losing control at LaGuardia airport on Thursday evening local time.

The plane was travelling from Fort Dodge, Iowa when the pilot reportedly slammed on the brakes. Travellers said they smelled burning rubber, NBC reported.

The 40 or so passengers, including Pence, evacuated through the back of the plane.

Pence said mud was splattered on the front of the cockpit windows.

It is believed nobody one was hurt but the runway is badly damaged.

Donald Trump said he is relieved everyone is okay.

LaGuardia Airport's weather broadcast said the airport will be closed until further notice due to poor visibility amid the rain.
