Identical twin makes shock murder confession decade after brother jailed for crime

The identical twin brother of a man convicted of first-degree murder, has made a shocking confession more than a decade later.

Karl Smith’s brother, Kevin Dugar, was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2005 for the shooting death of Antwan Carter.

Dugar, was sentenced to 54 years in prison for the crime.

Last week Smith confessed to the crime, which was pinned on Dugar in 2003, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The twins' mother, Judy Dugar broke down in tears while listening to Smith's confession in court.

“I’m here to confess to a crime I committed that he was wrongly accused of,” Smith said as his brother watched on.

It was the first time the pair, both 38, had seen each other in years.

Smith claimed police found his brother guilty of the shooting murder at the time, because the pair "acted as one".

"He pretended to be me, and I pretended to be him," he said.

Smith claimed he was the one who shot at the group of rival gang members, a move that ended Mr Carter’s life.

Smith had previously confessed to his brother in a letter that he was the one who committed the crime, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Shooting survivor Ronnie Bolden identified Dugar as the shooter at the time, something that was also supported by a teenage witness.

Smith is currently serving a 99-year prison sentence for another crime he committed in 2008.

A six-year-old boy was shot in the head during a home invasion and armed robbery, according to the Tribune.

The prosecution claimed Smith confessed to the crime his brother was convicted for after an appeals process upheld his own current conviction.

“He’s got nothing to lose,” Assistant State’s Attorney Carol Rogala said.
