Woman allegedly attacks her ex inside mental health facility in Brisbane

A 28-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a male patient at Toowong Private Hospital.

According to police, staff intervened and detained the woman, who is believed to be the ex girlfriend of the man she attacked.

The 38-year-old man was reportedly attacked at around 6.15pm on Sunday night when he returned to his room.

"A male person received stab wounds to his neck and upper body,” police told 7 News.

At the time of the attack, the victim was a patient at a mental health care facility.

"The male was an inpatient at the hospital, however the female person was an unannounced visitor,” police told 7 News.

The female attacker was allegedly waiting in the victim's room, armed with two knives.

“This person was a visitor, so you can't screen all people that are going into health facilities,” Beth Mohle from Queensland Nurses' Union told 7 News.

"The wounds are quite serious. It appears to be reasonably stable at the moment,” ambulance officers told 7 News.

After being alerted to the attack, nurses at the facility rushed to assist the man.

Local authorities later labeled their response as “quite heroic actions”.

Staff have since been praised for their actions and also offered counseling.

Nurses provided first aid to the victim, before disarming and detaining the alleged attacker until police arrived at the scene.

According to police another person received minor injuries as a result of the attack.

The accused faced court on Monday.

“She's doing okay, as best as can be in the circumstances,” her lawyer told 7 News.

The victim is recovering in a different hospital following surgery.
