Woman slams young father for buying groceries with food stamps
A US woman's verbal attack on a young father for using food stamps as payment at a supermarket has prompted a furious backlash from thousands of social media users.
The man is seen standing at the checkout with a trolley full of goods and a small child seated in the cart when the woman behind him notices that he is using food stamps to pay for a portion of his groceries.
The coupon-based system is an American government initiative that uses tax-payer dollars to provide a number of vouchers or ‘food stamps’ to households with low or no income to spend at selected food outlets.
Making no attempt to hide her disgust, the woman can he heard telling the man that he should work harder.
“You know, I put in 50 - 60 hour weeks... trying to provide for my family,” he replies.
“You’re not providing for it, I am,” the woman says, raising her voice. “The government is.”
“You’re not,” the man says.
“They take it out of my check,” the woman snaps. “Bulls**t they don’t.”
The man turns his back on the woman saying, “I don’t care about you, lady. Just shut the f*** up.”
Behind the counter, the cashier can be heard apologising to the man's partner - who is filming the incident - for the woman’s erratic behaviour.
“I’m sorry you have to deal with that ma’am,” the Walmart employee says.
The argument quickly turns political and the man proceeds to advise the woman that if she doesn’t agree with the laws, she should contact her "local senator and congressman and issue a complaint”.
“I’m not stupid,” the woman fires back.
“I have a degree. I’m pretty damn smart.”
“You keep saying that, over and over. Like I’m supposed to be proud of you or something,” the man says.
He tells her to mind her own business and as he pays for his shopping, he reminds her: “I don’t make the rules, lady”.
“You just take advantage of them like everybody else,” she responds.
“Why wouldn’t I?” he says before the video cuts off.
The video has accumulated over two million views on YouTube over the past 10 days and has sparked a heated response from thousands of YouTube users.
“She should be embarrassed to speak to anyone that way in front of children. She has a lot of nerve,” one user wrote.
“That woman complaining did nothing but make herself look like an a**hole in front of the entire world. That $36 we all pay every year to cover food stamps and Medicaid and other public assistance is nothing compared to the desperate need of those who require it. She should be ashamed of herself,” another said.
“If she hates welfare so much, why does she shop at a retailer that helps their employees get on welfare?” a viewer commented.
Walmart has previously come under fire for paying its employees wages so low that many staff members qualify for public assistance, the Huffington Post reported.
