The force sent debris flying more than 200m.

The explosion also sparked a grassfire in a median strip and residential backyard, which witnesses rushed to contain with garden hoses before fire crews arrived.

The driver had only just filled up his car at a local petrol station about 100m from the scene.

Witnesses said they saw the man’s legs were on fire when he exited the 4WD.

The Ford Territory 4WD was not insured.
