The former babysitter of a toddler who disappeared from her home and was found sitting by the side of a road miles away — alone, naked and with her head shaved — has been charged with kidnapping.

Abigail Hanna, 21, was being held on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery of a child, and breaking and entering in the night time for the alleged abduction of 2-year-old Lyndon Albers in Boston, Massachusetts.

Hanna used to babysit the girl, who was reported missing from her home on Friday morning, Hamilton Police Chief Russell Stevens said the family had trusted the babysitter before she was recently fired.

The girl was reunited with her family and taken to Boston Children's Hospital.

The shivering toddler was discovered by passing motorists about 12km from her home in the town of Rowley, hours after she disappeared from her home.

Tom Crosby said he and his wife spotted the child on the side of the road.

Mr Crosby said he had to question whether it was a baby or a doll and claimed it was a 'vision' that compelled him to immediately turn his car around, he told Boston Herald.

The couple then bundled the child into their car and gave her a blanket, as they waited for police.

The ex-babysitter had recently shared a link to a poem she had written on Facebook and had also published on website Teen Ink.
