Missing men were just fishing

A police rescue mission to find two fishermen reported missing off Mandurah overnight was called off this morning after the pair were found safe and well.

The men had decided to stay out on the water longer than they first reported to family and friends but failed to tell anyone of their plans.

The pair went out on their 5.5m vessel yesterday morning and were due to return about 3pm.

A concerned friend contacted Water Police at 1.30am after the men had not turned up.

Police deployed a helicopter and two rescue boats to look for the men and located the vessel about 20 nautical miles from Dawesville coast.

A water police spokesman said it was important for anyone heading out on the water to make sure their vessel had a functioning radio, log on with the local sea rescue and adhere to agreed times.

"Had all these things been taken into account, something like this could have been avoided," he said. "We're just happy the men were found safe and well."
