Dad died on Bucks night after downing spiked pint
A dad tragically dropped dead on his son’s Bucks night after downing a pint of cider which was spiked with spirits.
Nigel Hamer, a 46-year-old truckie from Wales, was out celebrating with his 27-year-old son Sean and his friends from the rugby club, reports The Daily Mail.
Mr Hamer had been drinking all day when he downed dangerous concoction, an inquest heard.
And he collapsed outside the Castle Hotel in Pontardawe and died, despite the paramedics’ best attempts to revive him.
The inquest hear how Mr Hamer was not used to high levels of alcohol because of his job, which entails driving trucks across Europe.
Alison Finall, a consultant pathologist, told the inquest: “The fatal range for alcohol is usually between 300 and 500mg.
“He is short of that but it is very high. It would have caused a significant affect on his brain.”
His son Sean married Nicola James 24 days later, a day after burying his father.
He said: “I never imagined I’d be having to plan my father’s funeral the day before my wedding.
“I had a long chat with Dad just two days before it happened. I told him that I loved him. No one can take that away from me.”
The coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure.
“On this particular occasion he had consumed a larger than normal amount of alcohol and sadly this has been the unexpected outcome,” said coroner Philip Rogers.
“Mr Hamer’s average intake was 14 units per week, entirely consistent with his job as a truck driver.
“He was a hardworking man who went all across the country and Europe.
“On this particular occasion he had consumed a larger than normal amount of alcohol and sadly this has been the unexpected outcome.”
