The 5c coin that could be worth $200
Australians with five cent coins minted in 1972 could be holding onto hundreds of dollars, according to the Royal Australian Mint.
That’s because there were only 8.3 million 5c pieces minted in that year. However, there were 39.5 million 5c pieces minted in 1971 and 48.8 million minted in 1973.
And in 1976 the number of 5c pieces minted climbed to 115 million.
Coin collector Brad Sanders’ recently highlighted this anomaly, after he found that he couldn’t find any 5c pieces from that year.
“I had about $100 in 5c pieces and I was missing that one year. I couldn’t believe it so I started doing my research and found out,” he told 7NEWS.
He eventually found one, noting that 5c coins from 1972 can go for up to $200 depending on the condition they’re in.
Australians have also been told to keep an eye out for $1 coins that could be worth thousands of dollars.
The $1 coins minted using the incorrect obverse die for 10c pieces are dubbed Mule dollars and feature two rings on the head side of the coin.
They can sell for as much as $5,000 as there were only around 6,000 of these coins made.
