Accused killer quizzed over violent attack

The man charged over the brutal Fitzroy stabbing murder of Werribee man Shaun Wright on St Patrick's Day was questioned by police over another violent attack less than 24 hours earlier.

Seven News can reveal it happened just after midnight on March 16 at a McDonalds in Clifton Hill.

Two men were attacked by a man with broken glass as they were leaving the restaurant, but managed to escape with minor injuries.

The alleged offender then ran from the scene and was caught by police a short time later.

Seven News has learned that the attacker was the man later charged over the stabbing murder of 21-year-old Shaun Wright, at Fitzroy on March 17.

It is believed police had insufficient evidence to charge him and he was released pending further enquiries.

Less than 24 hours later, Mr Wright was tragically stabbed to death on Johnston Street in Fitzroy.

At this stage, the man has not been charged over the bottle attack.
