Driver killed when truck plunges into river

A driver is dead after the cement truck he was driving rolled off a bridge and crashed into a river in Victoria.

The truck driver, a 53-year-old Ballarat man, lost control of the vehicle on Coopers Bridge in Meredith, northeast of Geelong, at 7am (AEDT) on Friday.

Police said the truck plummeted seven metres down an embankment before coming to a stop in the Moorabool River.

The truck driver died at the scene.

Meredith-Steiglitz Road was closed as rescue crews worked to clear the scene.

Police have urged motorists to take extra care on the roads during the busy festive period.

The death takes the state's provisional road toll to 225 compared to 271 this time last year.
