A Goldfields man who lost $21,000 through two separate internet dating scams has revealed his story, in the hope it will protect others from falling victim to a similar situation.

Mark, a 52-year-old man who went looking for love online, twice became the target of Ghanaian “women” who gained his trust before slowly requesting money for a variety of reasons.

He has issued a warning against sending money to overseas partners people had met online, as officers the Major Fraud Squad and Consumer Protection travel to the Goldfields to stage intervention visits with dozens of victims.

Police figures show the total monetary loss for the Goldfields-Esperance region through online scams could exceed $1.7 million

It all began when Mark went on an internet dating site, searching for a life-long partner, only to be stung twice and left feeling betrayed and angry.
