After 10 years spent tearing up the airways, Triple J's The Doctor has announced he will be departing the station to devote more time to his own music.

The popular presenter, whose real name is Lindsay McDougall, first hosted various incarnations of the breakfast show before moving to the drive timeslot for the past five years.

In that time, he has spent more than 6100 hours on air and conducted 3520 interviews.

But McDougall, who plays lead guitar in punk rock band Frenzal Rhomb, will throw it all in come December to focus on making music.

Triple J is planning a bumper show to send off the popular host on December 11 and will announce who will be taking over the drive show later this year.

Musicians from across the country have been sending their favourite memories of McDougall to celebrate his radio career, including Missy Higgins, John Butler and Illy.

"I think my favourite interview with Lindsay so far is when he kept referring to my pregnant belly as my "ukulele ledge"," Higgins said.

"Chatting with Lindsay's like chatting with an old mate, which is exactly the way you want all interviews to be."

Josh Pyke said he owed McDougall a "debt of gratitude".

"We should all salute The Doctor!," he said.
