Have we found life on Mars?

An armchair astronomer's claims to have found evidence of life on Mars have become an online hit as web users attempt to explain an unusual sight on the red planet.

David Martines claims to have found evidence of a cylindrical object "about 700 feet long and 150 feet wide" on the surface of Mars.

Mr Martines, known on Youtube as 'The Californian', says the object looks like it's a cylinder or made up of cylinders.

He says he can't identify the object, but that it must have been placed there by someone or something.

Mr Martines has dubbed the oddly shaped-object "Bio Station Alpha", because he believes the object has been occupied by some form of life.

"I’m just assuming that something’s living in it. Or has lived in it."

Mr Martines admits he doesn't know what it could be, but that hasn't stopped him from guessing.

"It could be a power station, or it could be a biological containment, or it could be a glorified garage. I hope it’s not a weapon".

"It could just be a place for weary space travellers", he says on the video which has now been watched by more than 500,000 people.

Mr Martines says he doubts that NASA could have placed something that big on Mars without people noticing.

But who is responsible for the mystery on Mars? Mr Martines is asking for any help he can get to identify the pictures.

"If any of you Youtubers have anything to say about this I’d be really interested to hear about it."

Sceptics have been quick to dismiss the 'discovery', saying the unusual image is most likely a rock formation, but Mr Martines remains defiant.

"Clearly it's not a rock. It's not a mountain, and I don't believe we have any rovers up there that are 700 feet long and 150 feet wide".
