Woman dies in scuba diving accident

A 53-year-old woman has died in a scuba diving training accident in Sydney's east after frantic efforts to save her.

Other divers on the course pulled the unconscious woman from the water at Gordons Bay, Clovelly, on Saturday morning and tried to resuscitate her before paramedics took over.

She was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital in a critical condition and later died.

NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Karl Cronan said paramedics did everything they could.

"Anybody who has experienced the horror of a drowning or near-drowning knows it is extremely traumatic for everyone involved, none more so than their loved ones," Inspector Cronan said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
