Unseasonal snow falls in South Australia
October snowfalls have blanketed Mt Lofty, near Adelaide, for the first time in more than 100 years.
While the snow attracted hundreds of visitors to Mt Lofty this morning, Hallett in the state’s mid-north also woke to a blanket of white.
Andrew Watson from the Bureau of Meteorology said the rare weather event was caused by a mass of icy air from the Antractic.
“The cold air came up very quickly and strong southerly winds brought the freezing level down, that’s the reason the snow fell and stayed on the ground,” he said.
Snow was also reported at Sevenhill in the Clare Valley and Mount Remarkable in the Flinders Ranges.
The wintery burst of spring weather has also brought rain to much of the state, with Wilmington in the upper north receiving the highest falls with 28mm.
Adelaide received 17mm in the 24 hours up to 9am today.
