Bodies found in Mexico were Aussie surfers, officials confirm

Mexican officials have confirmed the charred bodies found in a campervan in Sinaloa were the remains of two Australian surfers.

While the bodies were widely believed to be that of Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, DNA tests were still pending.

The Sinaloa state attorney general, Marco Antonio Higuera, confirmed on Monday that all results showed the corpses were of the missing men.

Coleman and Lucas were on a surfing trip and heading to Guadalajara when they went missing on November 20.

It is believed they were ambushed by gangs and killed, with their bodies and the van in which they were travelling torched.

The van was found in a remote area in the northwestern state of Sinaloa.

Mexican authorities have since arrested three alleged highway robbers in connection with the deaths, while two other suspects are reportedly on the run.

Authorities revealed that one of the men had been shot in the face when he resisted the robbery, before the robbers killed the second man and drove the vehicle to another location before setting it alight.

The surfers were remembered over the weekend with paddle out tributes in Mexico, the US and Australia.
