Colourblind father tears up when given the ability to see colours

A US father was brought to tears when he was able to see the colour of his children’s eyes for the first time.

Pennsylvania man Opie Hughes can see well but he is colourblind, a deficiency which reduces a person's ability to see colours.

His family filmed the moment Mr Hughes uses a pair of EnChroma glasses, which allow him to see colours accurately.

According to the company’s website, the glasses enable users to see more vibrant colours “without compromising the accuracy or colour balance of the scene”.

While Mr Hughes had been aware of the technology for some time, he could not afford the $350 price tag.

“My girlfriend actually stumbled across them online and tagged me in a link while I was at work,” he told Inside Edition.

He said he wanted them instantly but they cost too much money at the time.

Instead his sister, Katherine Empey, set up a GoFundMe profile asking the public to donate.

While Mr Hughes didn’t expect anything to come of the profile, Ms Empey’s cause was a success and she was able to give him the glasses on his birthday.

Ms Empey recorded the touching moment when Mr Hughes unwrapped the glasses and tried them on.

After having the glasses on for just a few seconds, Mr Hughes teared up as he checked out his children’s eye colours, clothing and flowers for the first time.

He also noticed how dirty the family car was.

The video was uploaded to YouTube and has gone viral.
