Two remanded after drug haul nets $225k of ice in Tasmania's north

A Melbourne man and woman have been remanded in custody to appear in court in Launceston next week after a late-night drug bust.

A 40-year-old man and 24-year-old woman appeared in the Magistrates Court in Launceston this morning, charged with trafficking in a controlled substance.

Police raided the Seaport Hotel in Launceston about 11:00pm on Friday, while investigating reports a hotel room had been booked with an alleged fraudulent credit card.

Police found 225 grams of methamphetamine, or "ice", a large quantity of cash and other items police claim are related to drugs

Police estimated the drugs have a street value of $225,000.

Constable Angus Dobner said the pair were arrested at the scene.

"They've been charged in relation to trafficking in a controlled substance," he said.

"It appears that from investigations conducted at this stage that it has been in relation to drug trafficking but obviously we're still making some inquiries in relation to that."

The pair were remanded to appear in court on Monday afternoon.
