Disqualified truckie accused of driving unlicenced

A South Australian truck driver who lost his licence after a deadly crash has been arrested and charged with driving while disqualified.

Errol Cain, 69, was nabbed after an investigation by the heavy vehicle inspection branch and is accused of driving unlicensed six times.

In a horror road smash in February 2010, the semi-trailer Cain was driving on the South Eastern Freeway veered into the emergency lane and crashed into the back of a parked car.

Linda Carter, 43, died in the crash.

She had been waiting in the vehicle for help with a flat tire.

Prosecutors argued Cain fell asleep at the wheel, but a judge found there wasn’t the evidence to support that.

A jury found him guilty of aggravated driving without due care and last October received a three-month suspended jail sentence, and was banned from driving for 10 months.

7News contacted Cain’s transport company at Mypolonga to speak with him, but the request was turned down.

A 61-year-old woman has also been interviewed as part of the police investigation and reported for five counts of providing a false statement and failing to record information within work diary records.

Police have told the family of the victim about this latest development.

Cain is due to face the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court in June.
