Boy who received new heart dies on first day of school
A 13-year-old boy who recently received a new heart tragically collapsed and died as he arrived for his first day of school.
Peyton West, from Ohio in the US, born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and had a life-saving transplant in March.
The teenager showed no signs of rejecting the heart, but collapsed after he got out of his brother's car at Goshen Middle School on Thursday.
"He went to bed, no problems. He woke up, no problems - being his goofy self," Peyton's father Corey told Fox29.
Just 15 minutes before he collapsed, Mr West took a photo of the teenager smiling with his school back pack as he headed off to school.
Classmates and teachers gathered at the school's football field to remember the teenager.
"Peyton was a wonderful young man a courageous young man who always had a big smile on his face," said Darrell Edwards, the district's superintendent.
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a birth defects that causes the left side of the heart not to form and limits blood circulation around the body.
The family have requested an autopsy.
