Japanese pop star stabbed multiple times by crazed fan

A Japanese pop star was left in a critical condition after she was stabbed multiple times by a crazed fan.

Mayu Tomita, 20, received nearly two dozen wounds to her neck and chest when she was attacked while waiting to perform at a concert venue in Tokyo.

Police arrested Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, at the scene.

It’s alleged the accused attacker was angry because Ms Tomita returned a gift he had sent her.

It’s believed Ms Tomita had complained to police about the fan last month.

Local media reports Ms Tomita put in a complaint to police after Iwazaki started sharing obsessive comments about her on social media.

When Iwazaki was arrested, he reportedly told police he ambushed the pop singer at the station and asked her about his gift.

"I lost my temper because she didn't clearly answer," he reportedly said.

Ms Tomita is a pop star and actor and is also completing college studies.

In 2014, two members of Japanese girl group AKB48 were attacked by a man with a saw at a meet-and-greet event.
