TV reporter saves elderly man from floodwaters during live broadcast

An elderly man in the US has had a lucky escape from dangerous floodwaters, after he drove into a submerged street and was rescued during a dramatic live TV broadcast.

Quick-thinking reporter Steve Campion was doing a live cross about the torrential rain in Texas when a black Prius drove past them on the street and straight into the deep brown water.

The driver remained in the car for a full minute before even attempting to open the door.

When the elderly man finally pushes open his door, a wave of floodwater surges into his car and he asks the television crew: "What should I do?"

"Swim!" Mr Campion yells back.

The the noise of the water drowning out the reporters voice, the man struggles to understand what he is being told.

"Tell me what to do," he says.

"Leave the car, swim," the journalist replies.

"Stay in the car?" the man asks, clearly unsure of how to handle the situation.

"Leave the car. Swim," Mr Campion repeats.

The man takes a deep breath and jumps into the water, but the weight of his clothes drag him down and he soon struggles to keep his head above the surface.

Mr Campion rushes towards him and pulls him to safety as only the roof of the Prius remains visible.

The shaken driver said he was uninjured and didn't see the floodwaters as he was driving down the street.
