Foo Fighters challenge church protesters with hilarious Rickroll

Rock legend Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters have peacefully challenged protesters from a notoriously homophobic church with a hilarious reenactment of the internet Rickroll meme.

The band blasted Rick Astley’s 1987 single “Never Gonna Give You Up” as they drove by protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who targeted a Foo Fighters concert at Kansas City's Sprint Center on Friday.

The extremist, right-wing group of Christians are notorious for protesting at soldiers’ funerals and other high-profile events to rail against what they say is the moral decline of American civilization.

The band pulled up alongside the protesters in a ute and quickly drowned out the the hateful protest with the catchy tune, which has been used as an Internet meme in which people fool others into watching Astley’s clip since 2007.

They held up signs saying “You got Rick Roll’d” and “Keep It Clean" to the Christians who were brandishing a variety of horrible signs.

A crowd quickly surrounded the band, who danced and sang their heart out for a solid minute before heading on their merry way.

Even many of the protesters seemed to join in the festivities, either not realising or not caring that they were the but of the joke.

This is not the first time the band have trolled Westboro picketers.

Back in September 2011, the band uploaded a video of themselves rolling in on a flatbed truck, singing a country song with lyrics like “Think I’m in the mood for some hot-man muffins” in front of the Westboro group of protestors who had gathered outside their show in Kansas City.

Grohl stopped halfway through the performance to say; "God bless America! It takes all kinds. I don't care if you're black or white or purple or green, whether you're Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian, Lady Gaga or Lady Antebellum, men loving women and women loving men and men loving men and women loving women -- you all know we like to watch that. But what I'd like to say is, God bless America, y'all!"
