Get ready to grab a bargain

The end of the financial year means just one thing to many people: mid-year clearance sales.

David Jones and Myer will ring the sales bell this week, tempting savvy bargain hunters with markdowns of up to 50 per cent.

David Jones' Half Yearly Clearance kicks off in all stores at 8am today and Myer's Multi Million Dollar Fashion Sale begins online today and in-store tomorrow.

Some of the biggest markdowns are on European and Australian designer labels, homewares such as bedding and kitchenware.

David Jones regional manager Ben Webster said this week was set to be the store's busiest of the year after Boxing Day week.

"This clears out all our old or discontinued stock to make way for new fashions but we have plenty of new-season discounts as well," he said.

"Nationally we expect to sell up to 70,000 dresses in the first week, 120,000 pairs of women's shoes, 40,000 handbags and a million business shirts."

Myer boasts up to 50 per cent off women's, men's and children's fashions and accessories.

There will be 40 per cent off Australian and international designer labels including Alex Perry, Karen Walker, Ellery, Maticevski, Aurelio Costarella, Kenzo, DKNY, and Zadig & Voltaire.

Myer's group general manager of apparel, Karen Brewster, said it was a timely opportunity to snap up some of this season's must-haves.

"A great winter coat and a pair of ankle boots are my pick," she said.

The bargains continue on June 10 when Myer launches its annual $150 million stocktake sale, with savings of up to 75 per cent.

Both stores will have extended opening hours.

And though past experience negotiating frenzied sale crowds might make some want to don a sumo suit and carry a shepherd's crook, the reality is much more straightforward and civilised for those who stay calm and know their limits.
