Iron Clad hottest pub for a coldie
Slim Dusty was sure everyone wanted a beer with Duncan, but it appears everyone in outback Australia wants to have a beer with Marble Bar publican Thomas Fox.
The town's only watering hole, the Iron Clad Hotel, finds itself number one, or as Mr Fox prefers, "numero uno" on a list of the "Top-10 Australian outback pubs for an ice-cold beer".
Compiled by Traveller website reporter Daniel Scott, the Iron Clad is given a rather interesting description: "With its corrugated roof and blistering paint, it's not much to look at but downing a glass of Emu Bitter here, on a day that's as hot as a furnace, feels like winning the Outback lottery".
There are plenty of Pilbara residents who will disagree and say the pub is definitely something to look at, but you will be hard pressed to find a man who won't say the beer is cold.
In fact, Mr Fox prides himself on having the coldest beer in Australia's hottest town.
"There are plenty of other good outback pubs which aren't on the list," he said.
"About eight years ago while the last lessee was here, I think it was voted one of the worst pubs in WA by a radio station, so who do you believe?"
If you haven't stopped by the Iron Clad for a beer - regulars are known to chuckle under their breath at the sound of an out-of-towner requesting a glass of wine - it should be near the top of the to-do list.
North West Telegraph journo Heather McNeill reckons it has some of the best bar snacks in the region, and if you pop in at the right time on a Friday or Saturday night, they may just happen to be free.
