Man dies after police shooting

A 44-year-old man shot by police during a confrontation in Hamilton Hill overnight has died in hospital.

The man was armed with a weapon, believed to be a large knife, when he was shot once in the stomach after charging at officers, a police spokesman said.

Police were called to the Jamy Place address at about 11pm in response to a domestic dispute.

The man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a critical condition but died from his injuries early this morning.

A knife discarded on the lawn outside the property, which has been cordoned off by police, was taken away by forensic officers today.

One neighbour said she heard police shouting at the man to 'drop the knife' moments before the shot was fired.

She then heard the officers them telling the man to 'stay with us'.

Another neighbour said he heard a couple arguing loudly yesterday evening but did realise the situation was serious until police arrived.

He said he heard a bang, which he initially thought was a party popper going off.

"There was a little bit of an argument and there was a bang and then the ambulance came," he said.

He said he had not noticed any trouble at the house in the past.

Superintendant Rob Anderson refused to provide details of the incident while it was under investigation but he did confirm two male officers had attended the address.

Major crime squad officers are investigating.
