Nationwide book time

Hillman Primary School students Hayley McIntosh, 8, Bailee Roberts, 8, Blair Lefeure, 8, and Abigail Ekins, 7, read Too Many Elephants in this House for National Simultaneous Story Time Day.

When the clock struck 11am at Hillman Primary School last Wednesday the whole school stopped for National Simultaneous Storytime Day.

Every year at the same time, since 2000, students across Australia have put down their pencils and sat and listened to teachers read a chosen book.

This year the Australian Library and Information Association chose the book Too Many Elephants in This House, written by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Andrew Joyner.

Deputy principal Margaret Broun said the school took part in the day because it was a fun way to encourage students to read and enjoy books. Mrs Broun said students had the chance to take part in interactive activities based on the book after the reading.

“The teacher reads them the story and then the kids can pull it to pieces and do lots of literary activities,” she said.

Student Abigail Ekins, 7, said the book reminded her of a trip to Bali where she rode an elephant. She said she enjoyed working on her reading skills.

It’s hoped the day will help address key learning areas of the National Curriculum up to Year 6, and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework.
