Low-key heist nets Japan thieves $333k ring

Tokyo (AFP) - Thieves made off with a diamond ring worth a third of a million dollars in a low-key heist at a Tokyo boutique on Christmas Eve, reports said Wednesday.

Two Asian men visited the Wako jewellery store in Tokyo's upmarket Ginza shopping district on December 24 and asked to examine a number of high-price rings from a glass case, the reports said.

Speaking in broken English and Japanese, they asked staff to accompany them to a bank to withdraw cash, the Mainichi Shimbun daily said.

The employees refused to leave the counter and the men left, but a short time later assistants realised a ring with a 4.26 carat diamond and a price tag of 35 million yen ($333,000), was missing.

Police declined to confirm the reports.
