Police arrest football fan for anchovy stunt

A football fan has been arrested for dumping a crate of fish on the opponents’ bench before a Greek Cup semi-final in the northern city of Thessaloniki.

Police say a 34-year-old supporter of PAOK dumped several kilograms of anchovies on the Olympiacos bench, delaying the start of the match for more than an hour.

Olympiacos are based the Athens port of Piraeus, and its supporters are nicknamed The Anchovies.

Another six PAOK fans were arrested during clashes with police before and after the match, which PAOK won 1-0.

The match itself was a fiery affair, with three players sent off for repeated brawls on the pitch.

PAOK fans also lit thousands of flares in the stands and threw them on the pitch, with one almost hitting the Olympiacos coach.

Greek minister for sport Yiannis Andrianos labelled the match a "disgrace to Greek football".

PAOK will play Panathinaikos in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on April 26.
