'Idiot' delivery riders create traffic chaos in Sydney tunnels

NSW transport officials have slammed “idiot” delivery cyclists who have been caught on camera risking their safety through busy motorway tunnels.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay has demanded action is taken against cyclists trying to keep up with Sydney’s takeaway demand.

“I just can’t believe some of these idiots. What are they trying to prove?” Mr Gay said.

“If they’re looking for publicity, we’ll give them publicity as the stupidest company in the city.”

The majority of cyclists caught on camera are food couriers, filmed riding with traffic, against traffic and taking to the tunnels on foot.

“This is one of those things that is really growing quickly and very much recently,” Transurban’s Andrew Head said.

“Bicycles and tunnels do not mix.”

Mr Head said the daredevil delivery riders were causing peak-hour congestion with fears the cyclists could get seriously injured, or worse.

“We’ve had five fatalities involving push bike cyclists this year,” Traffic and Highway Patrol superintendent Stuart Smith said.

“Any rider, cyclist or otherwise need to use the road safely.”

Some cyclists have blamed GPS directions for ending up in Sydney tunnels. Those caught riding in the tunnels against the law face fines of up to $2000.
