Mother jailed for abuse, girl's injuries like 'car crash'

An Adelaide mother who left her young daughter with injuries comparable to a "car crash" or being "kicked by a horse" has been jailed for at least a year after the girl's grandparents intervened and sought help.

The girl was left with broken bones, internal bleeding and a lacerated liver after a series of violent assaults which happened when she was just two years of age in 2013.

Before Judge Jack Costello on Friday, the girl's mother continued to blame her then-boyfriend for the young girl's injuries.

The now ex-boyfriend was found guilty of criminal neglect, but was handed a suspended prison sentence.

The court heard the little girl would have died if not for her grandparents, who sought help.

She has since recovered from her injuries and been removed from her mother's care, but there's fears she'll suffer long-term psychological damage.

The mother was sentenced to three years and four months jail, but could be free on parole after serving half that.

In sentencing the ex-boyfriend, Judge Costello was "narrowly persuaded" to suspend his one-year and three-month jail term.

"Like your co-accused, you appear to have exhibited little or no remorse for your offending," Judge Costello said.
