Bishop dumped as Liberal candidate for seat of Mackellar

Former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has lost a preselection ballot in her Sydney seat.

Jason Falinski, a former Liberal staffer defeated Ms Bishop 51 to 39 in a meeting lasting over five hours.

The result will still need to be formally endorsed by the Liberal Party executive.

It follows Ms Bishop being forced to resign from her role as Speaker last year as a result of an expenses scandal over her use of a $5000 chartered helicopter flight to attend a party fundraiser.

Outside the preselection meeting a defeated Bishop said, "it's been an honour to serve the people of Mackellar."

Ms Bishop has held the seat of Mackellar, on Sydney's northern beaches, for 22 years.
