Two dead after light aircraft crashed and exploded north of Melbourne

Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed and exploded upon landing in Lancefield, north of Melbourne.

An out-of-control plane was spotted moments before it hit a paddock and burst into flames near Kilmore-Lancefield and Shannons Roads, about 11.30am on Saturday.

Police and emergency services were at the scene.

Police are working to identify the bodies of the pilot and passenger, and features of the aircraft involved.

Air Traffic Safety Bureau authorities and the Coroner have been notified.

Kyneton police appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the plane in the air to call 5421 2900 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
