Melbourne firefighters battle giant tyre fire

A thick black plume of smoke can be seen across Melbourne's north after a large pile of truck tyres caught alight in an industrial zone.

More than 50 firefighters are battling a truck tyre blaze that caught alight in Broadmeadows at a Maygar Boulevard property just before 9am on Monday.

The Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB) has issued a community message as 15 fire trucks and specialist units make their way to the area.

There are currently no homes under threat because it is in an industrial zone.

So far the fire has burned through approximately one third of the tyre pile, measuring 120 by 30 metres, and is likely to burn for several hours.

More than 15 fire trucks and specialist units, with around 50 firefighters are currently on scene.

The smoke can be seen from as far away as Rye, 75km away on the Mornington Peninsula.

The cause is not yet known and the fire is not yet under control.
