Govt university bill inquiry to begin

Senators inquiring into the federal government's controversial plans for universities reform will hear a number of concerns.

A senate committee inquiry into the proposed laws begins public hearings in Brisbane on Tuesday.

The government believes deregulating student fees and raising interest rates on student debt will put universities on a stronger financial footing and open up courses to a wider range of students.

Labor, the Greens and the Palmer United Party oppose the legislation, concerned that deregulating universities will raise the costs for Australians seeking higher education.

Some institutions' submissions show they support deregulating fees but are concerned about potential student debt.

The National Tertiary Education Union has analysed the submissions made to the committee and says 90 per cent objected.
