Vic govt pledge to teach year 9s first aid

Victorian Year 9 students will receive comprehensive first aid training under a re-elected coalition government.

Premier Denis Napthine said on Sunday if the coalition won the November 29 election, it would invest $20.9 million over four years for the two-day training course.

Students will learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as how to manage burns, fractures, asthma attacks and exposure to extreme temperatures.

The program is set to be trialled in a selection of schools next year before being rolled out across the state in 2016.

"The willingness of bystanders to help someone in need is a key factor in Victoria's cardiac arrest survival rates being among the world's best," Dr Napthine said.

Students who complete the training will receive a Provide First Aid certificate.
