Watchdog seizes $1.6m of drug assets
Queensland's corruption watchdog has recovered more than $1.6 million from the man convicted over one of the Gold Coast's biggest hauls of the drug ice.
The Southport apartment of Daniel Kalaja was raided in April 2008, and detectives seized more than one kilogram of drugs and steroids worth about $650,000.
Kalaja pleaded guilty to 20 charges, including drug trafficking, in July 2012.
He was sentenced to 14 years behind bars.
Since that time, the Public Trustee has been holding his assets.
On Friday, the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) was granted a forfeiture order in the Supreme Court for assets worth more than $1.6 million.
The proceeds will go into Queensland's consolidated revenue.
The CCC's acting director of financial investigations, David Goody, said the order showed the commission was dismantling organised criminal networks.
"We also recover any proceeds to ensure that no one profits from these crimes," he said in a statement.
"This financially weakens the criminal networks, removes the profit motive and returns the proceeds to the public purse."
